Criminal Attorneys Attend School, Memorize Case Histories; Help People in Trouble
Criminal attorneys represent clients who are being prosecuted by the federal government or state governments for an action that has been determined as criminal or a crime in the eyes of the law.
Many crimes contain three essentials: an action or actus reus, the mental state of the person who took the action (mens rea) and the intent to do harm, mostly social harm. Crimes are determined to be misdemeanors, less serious offenses such as traffic violations, petty theft, and felonies or depending on which state you live in the possession of a small amount of marijuana are normally punishable by a fine. More serious offenses such as rape, grand theft, assault and battery, assault with a deadly weapon and murder/homicide warrant harsher punishment, such as imprisonment.
A Tampa criminal lawyer needs to know the three main essentials that make up a crime in addition to many thousands of cases that have come before the case he or she is presently working on. Additionally, they need to know the current laws and how they can affect a client in the outcome of the case. Attorneys need to have good memories for there is much memorization involved in becoming an attorney. They need to be able to bring up and quote from case histories to help prove their current case.
Many times a criminal lawyer will take the testimony of police officers and other eyewitnesses and break them down to make sure they have seen exactly what they say they saw and more times than not may them doubt themselves. Throwing doubt into a case is what criminal attorneys are best known for. Getting a jury to doubt what is going on or what happened in a case will help a criminal defense attorneys case more than anything. Defense lawyers know that no two people see the same thing at the same time; everyone sees something different even while looking at the same thing. For example, everyone attending a weddings ceremony in which a fight broke out would explain the fight in a different way. If there were 99 guests at the wedding, there would be 99 different versions with at least half saying one person started the fight and the other half saying the other person started the fight.
Once a person graduates from a university or college with a bachelor’s degree, they could then move on to law school which takes three to four years depending on if one decides to have an area of expertise. Students are highly encouraged to find jobs as interns at law firms during the summer months. Having practical experience is highly recommended and looks good on a resume.
