GA Fly Fishing Tries for the Big Browns in Fall Season

Posted by Kolleen on Saturday, February 20th, 2010

When the kids go back to school in September many anglers hang up their rod and reels in favor of some camouflage clothing and a rifle for a more ‘woodsy’ area, but a fly fisherman who wants a big brown trout knows that the best time to catch them is between late September and November.

The brown trout has spent all summer brooding deep in the cool waters, under brush and logs and in the fall.  The need to bulk up for winter and the spawning urges bring the browns to the shallower, more accessible lies. A GA fly fishing guide says an angler could snag a 20 inch long brown or a ‘monster’ near 10 pounds or more during the autumn season.

Traditionally, fly fishing for big browns in the fall calls for huge streamers or tiny dry flies. Baetis or Blue Wing Olive is the late-season hatch most of the country experiences. The springtime species are much larger than the fall varieties which are pretty small, so it would be best to carry with you pattern sizes 18 through 22. To mimic emerging mayflies, use flies tied with a CDC – cul de canard wings work particularly well because they can be fished just under the water or on the surface.

A fly fishing Georgia guide tells us that typically, hatching in mid-to late morning, fall olives will emerge in large quantities during overcast or even a snowy day and the browns will rise in the slower waters. The majority of rivers are clearer and lower in the fall than they are in the spring, wading should be adjusted to be slow and deliberate. Carefully make a delicate presentation because if you were to cast your line out over the trout or if the fly drags across the back of the fish, you could put the fish back down in the waters.

According to a GA bass fly fishing guide, the worse weather is often the best time for stream fishing, this is because the fish are less wary on darker days.
