Scented Candles Help With Aromatherapy; Rids What Ails You

Posted by Kolleen on Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Scented candles are believed to have various healing properties when used as aromatherapy, in which different scents help to awaken senses. For example, for a person who is having trouble sleeping, about an hour or half hour before bed time, light a Marjoram, Hops, Bergamot, Jasmine, Hyacinth, Chamomile, Celery or Lavender scented candle in the bedroom and allow it to burn, then simply sit and deeply inhale the scent. Always blow out a candle before going to bed because one should never leave a candle unattended because of the potential fire hazards.

When an individual smells a scent, that smell enters the nostrils and travels across the olfactory nerves located inside the nose. Then the scent heads upwards to the part of the brain which holds memories, moods and a person’s ability to learn new things. In this area, endorphins neurotransmitters and other ‘feel-good’ chemicals are released when stimulated by different scents. Put another way, various scents affect a person’s mood and emotions.

An example of a scented candle that would help to relieve depression – which is not a substitution for doctor prescribed medications or therapy – are lemon balm, basil, clary sage and jasmine. These particular scents could help to alleviate some of a person’s depression by helping them focus on the candle’s flame and scent rather than their overwhelming feeling of dread or sadness.

Many people have found that candles not only have a healing property about them, but are an elegant and rich looking way to add flare and ambience to a room or décor in ones house. Candles are mostly inexpensive decorations with a purpose and it could be to brighten up a dark spot in the room, add some color to an otherwise dull and colorless area or add style and grace or elegance depending on the candles container.

An old superstition says that an individual should never have un-burnt candles displaying in their home when visitors arrive, candles should be lit or have had at least been lit and blown out because the luck of candles is that they have been used before visitors arrive at the home.
