Opposition to Offshore Drilling May Slowly Fade

Posted by admin on Thursday, September 4th, 2008

One morning in January 1969, eight kilometers off the coast of Southern California, solve all hell.

An accident with a hole drilling island in the sea led to the exodus of 11 million liters of oil in the vicinity of Santa Barbara Channel. Thousands of seabirds, fish and marine mammals have been killed.

As the cleaning of volunteers vilified on the beach, the events of the day was the beginning of a new environmental movement, the United States. The nation’s first Earth Day was a year later, and a moratorium of holes in the sea was imposed in 1982.

Almost 40 years after the expiry of Santa Barbara, public opinion has changed. The drilling technology is less vulnerable to accidents, and the United States is hopelessly research for the oil-for the fight against the increase in energy prices.

The Congress of the United States can be an energy debate in this month that lifting the ban on offshore drilling platforms. It could also provide financial support to the technologies of renewable energies and measures to reduce consumption of fossil fuels. The politicians in both chambers of Congress, which previously opposed offshore drilling platforms are now in the expression for the expansion of energy policy. Even the district of Santa Barbara in the offshore drilling platforms.

The strength policy has forced the environmental groups to decide between the other hand, offshore drilling platforms or support, promotes legislation, which its objectives in the broadest sense with the climate crisis. While most of environmentalists against offshore drilling platforms, some large groups to facilitate their environmental objectives in May for the opposition’s own energy policy, which previously failed in Congress.

If national organizations in support of offshore drilling platforms, they can with new departments of local environmental groups are based, are off the coasts of the United States. “The leaders of local environmental groups are digging in their heels. You do not want to talk about offshore drilling platforms,” said Eric Smith, professor of political science at the University of California at Santa Barbara. “During this time, much of the environmentalists say we should talk and more talk about what to do with climate change. We have a fight. There is a struggle in the coastal areas through the country.”

In the Senate, the two-party support is always there for a bill that allows offshore drilling platforms. The reference by a coalition of 16 senators, the bill open to the outside of the continental shelf and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge oil drilling platforms and gas. It would also be the obstacles environmental objectives for the construction of the nuclear power plant, supported by other sources of energy, consumers about the tax incentives for vehicles with high energy efficiency and renewable energy tax credits to expand.

House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi President, a long-time defender of the ban on offshore drilling platforms, the Democrats energy sector during a radio address last month. The Confederation includes a portfolio of renewable energy standard, a demand of fossil fuels for companies to invest in technologies for clean energy, and funding for mass transport. The proposal also “the inclusion of parties outside the continental shelf of the hole with appropriate safeguards and without taxpayer subsidies for Big Oil,” she said.

Shortly after the radio address, the Sierra Club and the environmental America (formerly U.S. PIRG), which both welcomed the Pelosi plan. But environmental America has made its members to oppose the part of the proposal, could the coastal waters of the drilling site. “We have never had success in support of offshore drilling platforms,” said Ben Schreiber, an America’s lawyer. “Our basis for our members, no doubt continue to oppose offshore drilling platforms. They make the threat to our coast, our beaches.”

If the Congress shall not vote on the legislation of offshore drilling platforms, the Republican leadership has threatened to hold up funding for the next federal budget – before shutting down the government. Given the fact that the moratorium must also back in force each year by funds from a draft law, the Sierra Club supports Pelosi, despite the strategy of the group of the opposition in the offshore drilling platforms.

“No matter how it must have a voice,” said Melinda Pierce, the Sierra Club lobbyist for the blast furnaces of offshore drilling platforms and the Arctic. “Moreover, what happens with the Congress. .. Pelosi we support its strategy to ensure a lot of good, clean energy.”

Several groups are not supported by the public about the energy proposals until more details become known. But Richard Charter, government relations consultant with the advocates of the fauna of the Fund for the action, said the opposition drilling platforms in the sea and remains a priority throughout the movement. “There is a broad consensus throughout the national community to conserve, there is no reason to trash the coast to the renewable portfolio standards and more efficient automobiles,” he said.

Given the forthcoming elections, the Congress in May not to find the time the vote on the legislation of the hole before the session ends no later than this fall. In this case, a solution depends on the next Congress happened and who in the White House next year.
