Fly Fishing In North Georgia, Is This Job For You?

Posted by Chris on Friday, February 6th, 2009

A Georgia river fishing company could be a great place to work if you are an avid fisherman, in addition to knowing a thing or two about people.  A fly fishing company might consider hiring someone who has fishing experience but has not had a job as a captain or has been a fishing guide only on a temporary basis or for an internship.

Fly fishing in north Georgia can be a difficult job for those who do not enjoy being on the water, those who easily get motion sick or for those who do not like to touch “slimy things” such is the fish.  This is not to say this could not be a good job for a girl or woman because there are several thousands of great fly fishing women who have won hundreds of trophies for their fly fishing abilities.  However, not all women feel the same way and even some men feel squeamish around deep waters or fish.

It is a good idea to make sure this is the job for you by going out and taking a day long fly fishing trip with a guided tour and asking as many questions as they will answer.  Questions like what are the hours, what is the pay, do you work in the winter, what are the benefits and most importantly do you like your job?  These are just a few questions to begin with when approaching a career as a fly fishing guide.

More questions to consider asking a fly fishing company for signing on as a teacher or guide is if you will have to do a lot of camping outdoors and if you will be in charge carrying all the camping equipment like a tent, chairs, inflatable rafts, candles, towels, food, water, compass, ropes, a knife and kitchen equipment.  Usually the last person who starts working for a company, no matter what company, has to do the “grunt” work and this may mean hauling all the equipment from site to site.

If you are looking for money for college, this might be a good summer job depending on which geographical area you live in and if the fly fishing company is a popular one or not.  However, a larger determining factor should be if a fly fishing company is a safe company or not, what is their safety record or total number of days without an accident.
